For many of us, it’s been a while since we’ve flown abroad and the thought of flying again in a post pandemic world can seem a little daunting. I am here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be. I was recently invited to visit Leeds Bradford Airport for a unique behind-the-scenes tour to see the ACI accredited health and hygiene measures they’ve put in place to keep us all safe whilst travelling.

From on-site testing to antibacterial misters on frequent touch points, I was definitely impressed by all of the new COVID-19 secure features.

What to expect when flying from Leeds Bradford Airport

Step 1: On Site Testing

Firstly, there are two on-site COVID-19 testing facilities provided by NPH Group. Antigen testing in the main terminal and PCR testing just outside of the Airport.

The PCR testing centre is located in the Viking Airport Parking facility, where trained clinicians run through the process, and then undertake your test, before the sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis. PCR tests must be done 48 hours before your flight time, so this is a great option for anyone who lives locally to the airport.

The tests you require to travel abroad will depend on where and when you are travelling, and if you are fully vaccinated or not. Be sure to check the latest government travel advice before you fly. Book your pre departure COVID-19 test.

Step 2: Check-In

From the moment you enter the airport terminal, you’ll find touch-free hand sanitising points around every corner. To ensure everyone stays safe, and feels comfortable when travelling, all airport users are asked to continue wearing a face-covering. The Jet2.com and Jet2holidays check-in terminal has a newly installed luggage belt system which means that checked-in luggage can be processed much faster. Quicker processing means shorter queues, which means smaller crowds at check-in.

Look out for the brand new Greggs located just before security. Perfect for early morning coffees and pastries, or snap up some sausage rolls to enjoy later on the plane.

Step 3: Security

The airport has introduced additional hygiene measures such as powerful antibacterial misters targeting frequent touch-points including the luggage trays in security.

TRAVELISTA TIP: You can still take antibacterial hand gel through security and keep it with you at all times. Just make sure it’s under 100ml, like all other liquids.

Step 4: World Duty Free

World Duty Free at Leeds Bradford Airport is available, so you can still enjoy the full airport shopping experience. You can expect to see hygienic new ways to sample perfumes, such as a ticket pull system where each ticket contains a pre-scented tester.

Beyond World Duty Free you’ll find a variety of shops, eateries and outlets have now re-opened.

TRAVELISTA TIP: You can browse the entire World Duty Free store online before arrival using the click and collect service.

Step 5: Departure Lounge

The newly-renovated Yorkshire Lounge can be found after security. With lounge access, you can enjoy a range of hot food and drinks (including a glass of your favourite tipple!) before you fly. The best seats in the house are by the floor-to-ceiling windows, which offer a front row outlook over the airfield. The new interiors feel calming and stylish; and whether you’re travelling for work or play, it’s definitely the best place to relax and refuel before you catch your flight.

Access to the Yorkshire Lounge costs £30 per person (£20 for children). Book your access today.

Step 6: Enjoy your holiday!

Visiting Leeds Bradford Airport has definitely made me feel more confident about travelling abroad again after seeing how many thoughtful measures they have added to the airport journey. Hopefully I will be returning to Leeds Bradford Airport in September to hop on a plane to Malaga for our holiday in Almuñécar!
